    Public Policy Interests

I am deeply concerned about the numerous problems facing our global society and because I believe that advancements in science and technology hold the answers to many of them. On issues from climate change to economic development and sustainability to international peace and security, science and technology must be part of any effective strategy. Futhermore, the science community has a responsibility to take a leading role in offering solutions and in assuring that scientific knowledge is intelligently and responsibly applied in devising public policies. It is a large challenge, and we have important work to do. We must increase support for science, strengthen and diversify the science and technology workforce, foster science education for "everyone," and raise public understanding and engagement with science. Moreover, most problems facing society are global in character and will require international cooperation among scientists and engineers. - Dr. Alan I. Leshner
