COS Non-degree Program

In addition to the Ph.D., Masters, and Certificate programs, COS also offers Non-Degree status for those students who may wish to take only a few courses, or for those who have not been able to assemble the necessary application materials for one of the other programs before the beginning of the semester. Up to 12 credit hours taken in Non-Degree status may be applied towards an academic program in the future.

For admission into COS Non-Degree status, applicants should have a B.S. degree in mathematics, computer science, engineering, or natural science. Foreign applicants must also submit results of the TOEFL exam.

Admission to Non-Degree status does not guarantee admission to the Certificate, Doctoral, or Masters programs at a later date. Students who do not register for the term for which they are accepted may have their enrollment postponed for one semester upon written request to the COS Graduate Admissions Processing Center.

For Non-Degree applications, the following materials are required:

Non-Degree application
Official transcripts
Application Fee (make checks payable to George Mason University):
$75 for mailed applications
$60 for online application

If Non-Degree admission is approved, a notice of admission will be sent to you. Admitted students may use the online system at to register for classes during their assigned registration time. Please note that approval of courses on your application does not imply that a specific course section will be open at the time of registration.
