Image Processing for Bioinformatics

April 10, 2008

When: Fall 2008 - Wednesday Evenings
Where: Prince William Campus - Bull Run Hall
Instructor: Jason M. Kinser, D.Sc. email office:703 993 3785

1 Justification

In the early days of bioinformatics a majority of the information was in the form of character strings. That is no longer the case. In recent years databases of image information are becoming popular. In fact, it is estimated that textual information will soon be less than half of the information that is contained on the world wide web. This change is also seen in the world of bioinformatics where information is increasingly being stored as visual information.

2 TOPICS:

3 Pre-requisites

Calculus, linear algebra, programming skills.

This class will be taught in the Python language and the first session will be dedicated to learning this language. Students with programming experience in other languages such as C++, Java, Matlab, etc. will find the conversion to Python to be mostly painless.

Students can use any suitable computer language in this class. Please contact the instructor for further information.
